The first row must contain a BS. A change-point row normally contains an FS from the old setup and a BS for the new setup.

Height of Instrument method
HI = known RL + BS. For each observed point, RL = HI − IS or HI − FS. At a change point, the FS produces the change-point RL, then the BS establishes the next HI.
- Only one of IS or FS may be entered on a row.
- A change-point row may contain FS and BS together.
- The final observation should normally be an FS onto a known or closing point.
- Arithmetic agreement checks transcription and calculation, but not every field blunder.
Frequently asked questions
What is a reduced level?
RL is the elevation of a point relative to an adopted datum.
What is a backsight?
A BS is the first reading from an instrument setup onto a point of known RL, used to calculate HI.
What is a foresight?
An FS is normally the last reading before moving the instrument, often taken on a change point or closing benchmark.
What is an intermediate sight?
An IS is any other reading from the current instrument setup onto a point whose RL is required.
What is the arithmetic check?
The sum of BS minus the sum of FS must equal the final calculated RL minus the starting RL.
