Calculation method and good practice
For each zone, the calculator uses volume = plan area Ă (existing level â design level). Positive differences are cut and negative differences are fill. The method assumes the entered levels represent the average surface level across each zone.
- Use smaller cells where the ground or design surface changes rapidly.
- Do not mix metres with feet or square metres with square feet.
- Account separately for topsoil strip, unsuitable material, batter slopes, haul routes and material classification.
- Bulking and compaction vary by material and method; use project-specific factors.
- For final quantities, compare validated digital terrain models or surveyed cross-sections.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between cut and fill?
Cut is material excavated where existing ground is above design level. Fill is material required where design level is above existing ground.
Why is an area required?
A level difference is a depth, not a volume. Multiplying the representative depth by plan area produces a cubic quantity.
What does net balance mean?
Net balance is cut minus fill. A positive value indicates a geometric surplus; a negative value indicates a geometric deficit.
Do cut and fill automatically balance on site?
No. Material suitability, bulking, compaction, wastage and sequencing can prevent direct reuse even when geometric volumes match.
Can I use feet?
Yes. Select Imperial and enter levels in feet and areas in square feet; results are cubic feet.
